MEMBERS OPEN DAY AND OFFICIAL CEREMONY RECAP
I’m still sulking about the rain that day as it was the first rainy day I can remember period! but we still had around 40 people turn up for the main ceremony event which was attended by the Mayor Mark Irwin, Councillor Tony Krsticevich, Patron Karen Caddy and Major Sponsors from Trevors Carpets, Let Go and Davey Real Estate. Thanks to Peter for being the MC and for the Captains and Coaches speeches and also a big thanks to Liz and Gaye for setting up and taking care of the afternoon tea - the spread looked fantastic on the tables! What I’m really excited about this seasons opening is the grass!. I think it’s looking amazing and we are very lucky to have a great team that can maintain and prepare these for us to play our tennis.
INTERNATIONAL RULES 2025 RECAP
Huge thanks to Conor for organising the competition tennis on the day. Stephen for the initial setup, Alan for his international flags, Rob for the cleanup of the surrounds, Peter for MC works and the wonderful help from Liz and Jo for catering and Troy and Suz for the bar. A great day for the club hosting the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and we look forward to many more events such as this in the coming years.
FYI the International combined team won the day!
COMMUNITY OPEN DAY - SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER
Hopefully the scheduled rain will stay away so that we can get some public down for a free afternoon of social tennis from 1pm onwards. For Club members and pennant players it’s business as usual but the social players will have public joining them as they try out our grass courts and facilities. We have been promoting this event online with paid ads across Meta and Instagram and we have been placing it on our social pages and club website and posters so fingers crossed the rain stays away and we get potential new members joining us for tennis. Event info here and see the Captain’s report for additional info.
HOW CAN YOU HELP US? - BRING DOWN A RELATIVE OR FRIEND AS THE BEST REFERRAL IS A PERSONAL REFERRAL.
PASTA NIGHT - SATURDAY 29th NOVEMBER
This event is back on and should be a cracker of a night with Liz creating a wonderful environment in the main patio and fantastic and delicious menu for all to enjoy. More info here on event, menu and ticket purchasing. The event is open to all family and friends so rally the troops and make a table on the night. Ticketing is pre sold via Humanitix and we will close off ticket sales a few days earlier for catering numbers.
STEVE YARWOOD AND “LET GO” - MAJOR SPONSOR FOR THE 2026 AUSTRALIA DAY DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
Massive thanks to Steve Yarwood from Let Go our Major Sponsor once again taking on this event and donating all the prize money. This event is going to be amazing as its now a full doubles format consisting of mens, ladies and mixed ensuring that we get maximum participation. I’m personally looking forward to playing in this tournament which is scheduled the day before Australia Day on Sunday the 25th January 2026. View the Tournament Page here. See the Captain’s report for more info.
FAREWELL DEREK CHADWICK
The members of the Scarborough Tennis Club lost a great friend and true sportsman to not only tennis but to all the codes he played so well with such flair, poise and control.
Derek was measured in everything he did and was admired by many and those lucky enough to have been part of his life can consider themselves fortunate to share the court and a beer with such a wonderful man.
For those that dont know - Derek joined the tennis club in the early 80's after 20 years of first grade cricket at Scarborough. At the end of his cricketing days he used to look over the at the tennis club and think that they looked like they were having more fun fun than he was so he retired from cricket and took up tennis.
For 40 plus years Derek played pennant and social tennis and it was a true family affair with his wife Jan, and son Grant also playing. More recently and for the last 15 years or so Derek was an integral part of the "Friday Crew" that hit every week with their mates and shared a beer or two or three afterwards. Derek played in his Friday Crew right up to just a few months ago.
Derek you will be missed but never forgotten. May the aura that surrounded you on the tennis court, on the cricket pitch and on the football field and in your life continue to burn bright wherever you may be.
Our sincere and heart felt condolences go out to Jan, Grant, Rebecca, Leslie and all of the Chadwick family. Rest in peace Derek.

COMMUNITY OPEN DAY – SATURDAY 1st NOVEMBER
This Saturday, 1st November, we’re hosting our Community Open Day a great chance to showcase our club and welcome new faces! The usual Saturday social will have a community focus, and we’re hoping to create a warm, fun atmosphere that encourages visitors to enquire or even join the club. We’d love for members to pop down, say hello, and share some splendid stories with our guests.
The plan for the day is at 1pm visitors arrive with play to commence at 1:30pm. At 3:30pm we will have afternoon tea to provide us a chance to speak with the visitors. If they still want to play they are more than welcome. Aim to finish up 4:30/5pm.
Rick will be on hand with coaching stations set up on Courts 7–9, and he’ll be available to answer any coaching-related questions. While we’ll have 7/8 Courts available for social play, please note that two pennant teams will also be playing at home on the day. Let’s make it a memorable afternoon for our community!
GRASS COURT REOPENING
Despite the rain, we gave it our best shot to play and with three courts in action, we still had a great time out on the grass. It’s amazing to see just how much love there is for our beautiful grass courts. The willingness to get back on them, even in wet weather, says it all! It was a fantastic day, and a big thank you goes out to everyone who helped make it run so smoothly.
INTERNATIONAL RULES
Internationals took the win! The international team, boosted by our fantastic visitors from Bangkok, brought the spirit and skill to take the win on the day. It was incredible to see all our grass courts buzzing with high-quality tennis, shared between our members and special guests.
The Bangkok players had a wonderful time, and a huge thank you goes out to everyone who played and stayed to make it such a memorable experience for them.
TWILIGHTS
Our popular Twilight Tennis sessions will return in December, running from 5:00pm until sunset a perfect way to wind down the day with some relaxed social tennis.
Due to my additional training commitments for Cheerleading Nationals, I won’t be able to run Thursday sessions until my season wraps up. Once training finishes, we’ll be back in full swing!
In the meantime, if you’d like to come down and have a hit amongst yourselves, you’re more than welcome to enjoy the courts and keep the twilight spirit alive.
OPEN AND MIXED DOUBLES AUSTRALIA DAY TOURNAMENT SPONSORED BY LET GO – SUNDAY 25th JANUARY
It’s official we’re back on the Tennis West calendar for our Australia Day Tournament, and once again we’re stoked to have the awesome support of Steve Yarwood and Let Go behind us!
We’re going big this year with Open and Mixed Doubles across the board:
Open Mixed Doubles – Div 1 & 2
Open Men’s Doubles – Div 1 & 2
Open Ladies Doubles – Div 1 & 2
Each event will run as a round robin, with two groups (A & B) of 6 pairs. Matches will be timed sets it’s a one-day tournament, so we’re keeping things moving!
You can enter one or two events, but fair warning: if you go for two, you’ll be on court all day with barely a moment to breathe (or eat). Literally you will not have a lunch break if you compete in both events. We’ve got 12 grass courts and 6 hard courts ready to go, and we’re capping entries at 144 players (72 men and 72 women). So, grab a mate, lock in your doubles partner, and get your name down for what’s shaping up to be the biggest Scarborough tournament in recent memory.
Entries are now open let’s make it a cracker!
All Tournaments – Tennis Australia
SUMMER PENNANTS
We’re into Round 3 of the Summer Pennants season, with matches kicking off again this weekend. There’s plenty of action happening across the club, with four Saturday teams, five Sunday teams, and our Wednesday morning ladies all representing Scarborough with pride.
If you’re not currently playing pennants but would like to get involved, feel free to chat with me or one of the team captains we’re always on the lookout for reserves!
Important note for Sunday teams: This season, when your team is playing at home, you will be self-rostered for bar duty as a team. That means we will need multiple players with their RSA, so if you have not got yours yet, now is a great time to look into it.
GRASS COURTS
Remember when using the grass courts you need to unlock the gate; the code is 2512. Once you enter you need to lock the gate again, to ensure no one else enters.
INCLUSIVE SOCIAL
As we return to the grass courts and welcome more visitors, including those attending coaching clinics, I want to remind everyone that social tennis is open to all.
It takes courage for new players to step onto the court, especially if they’re still building confidence. We all know that practice helps us improve, so I ask for your patience and encouragement when you see someone new joining in.
Let’s keep Scarborough welcoming and supportive. A friendly chat or a bit of understanding can make a big difference. Thanks legends. You’re what makes this club great.

FACILITIES REPORT
NON SLIP SURFACE IN THE LARGE PATIO
The COS will commence the painting Monday 3rd November. This will need drying time so it will impact the Tuesday Social and Wednesday Pennants where access to the toilets and to the kitchens will be from the main northern club entrance. We have been assured that the newly painted area will be available for usage from Friday 7th November.
NORTHERN PATIO GARDEN MAKEOVER
Works are now well underway and the palms and old garden bed have been removed in readiness for the busy bee on Friday to reduce the top soil so that we can bring the paving team in to pave over this area which will then create a new seating area for the hardcourts. In the process of preparing for this demolition we found that most of the patio poles had rusted away at the bases so COS has been onsite installing temporary footings and they will be fixing and cementing the poles to ensure this patio is back in good working condition.
BUSY BEE - FRIDAY 31st OCTOBER @ 3PM
We need some man power to remove appox 40 wheel barrow loads of soil from the garden - please register you can help with Peter Cole and the more we get down the faster we can enjoy a beer after.
NEW SPOTLIGHT FOR THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING
We finally have an electrician coming onsite to replace this old spotlight with LED and it will also have an auto timer to turn this light on from dusk till dawn to ensure that we can all see when accessing the club and courts at night time.
LARGE PATIO SUN & RAIN ISSUES
Last week we installed matching shade cloth in the open roof of the main patio that faces west to block out the extreme sunlight and it will also stop most of the rain. We are hoping this solution works and will contribute to a better outdoor experience for all.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Coach Kiro has some limited availability for private sessions before his afternoon/evening shift (2:00–3:00 pm times) and also on Friday mornings. Many of our prime spots are already taken with ongoing weekly sessions, so times can be hard to secure—please get in early if you’d like to book.
RESTRINGING SERVICE
We’re proud to share that Anthony Lau is now an officially accredited restringer through Tennis Australia’s qualifications. Anthony has a sharp eye for detail and leads our restringing team with care and precision.
For your convenience, we can always leave your completed racquet in the captain's room (or another agreed spot) to arrange easy pick-up and drop-off.
