From the Chairman & Committee

A new direction for the club.

I’ve been talking for a couple of years now about the fact that our club is changing.

The wonderful generation of Pennant and Social players who have been the backbone of Scarborough Tennis Club for many years are naturally reducing in numbers. Life moves on, people retire from tennis and, unfortunately, that has had an impact on our Social Tennis numbers and the overall energy around the club.

So, we’re not sitting still.
We’re building the next chapter of Scarborough Tennis Club.

And that means doing two things at the same time.

We want to become a club known for great tennis.

We are putting a real focus on the quality of tennis at Scarborough, with our State Grade Ladies, Junior State Grade team and all of our Senior and Junior Pennant teams representing the club.

We want good players to look at Scarborough and think:

“That’s where I want to play my Pennants.”

Quality attracts quality, and we want to build a strong competitive culture while continuing to develop the next generation of players through our Junior pathway.

But we also need to open the front door.

We need new people coming into the club.

That’s why the Committee is introducing Sunday Arvo Tennis from Sunday 4th October - an easy, affordable way for people to come down, have a hit, meet some people and experience Scarborough without needing to know anyone or commit to membership.

For just $15, people can come along every Sunday from 1pm, with organised sets and supervisors making sure everyone gets on court and mixes with different players.

It is deliberately designed to be welcoming.

Come on your own. Bring a mate. Bring your partner. Just come and give it a go.

And who knows - they might enjoy it enough to become a member and become part of our club.

You can read more about Sunday Arvos here:

Our new club direction really comes down to three things:

GREAT TENNIS. GOOD PEOPLE. ONE COMMUNITY.

That’s what we’re building.

Our new website is live!

And speaking of our new direction…

The new Scarborough Tennis Club website went live today!

I’ve spent a significant amount of time rebuilding the site from the ground up in WordPress, with a completely new way of talking about our club.

It’s designed to do two things:

Help potential new members understand who we are and why they should join us, while also being a useful information hub for our existing members.

Every page has been written to work together - from Sunday Arvos and Social Tennis through to State Grade, Pennants, Juniors, Coaching, Membership, Court Hire and everything else happening at Scarborough.

So please have a look around, bookmark it and make it your go-to place for club information.

Watch the AFL Grand Final at the club.

Saturday 26 October · From 12 noon

The biggest day of the AFL season is here!

Come down to the club and cheer on the Dockers as they chase their first-ever Premiership. 💜

We’ll have the game on, the bar open and plenty of room to settle in and enjoy the afternoon together.

Bring along a plate of food to share, bring your mates, wear your colours and get behind the boys.

Footy. Food. Friends. A few drinks. What more do you need? 🍻🏉

New club Treasurer - Jean Rey.

I’m excited to announce that Jean Rey has officially come on board as our new Club Treasurer.

Jean brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role as a Chartered Accountant, and we’re very fortunate to have him joining the Committee.

The onboarding process for the Treasurer role is quite involved, so I’d also like to thank Toby Nicholls for stepping into the caretaker role and, importantly, for actively supporting Jean through the transition and helping him get access to and familiarise himself with everything he needs to take over the role properly.

Welcome Jean, and thanks again Toby for helping make the transition as smooth as possible.

State Grade Ladies Sponsor - Let Go Short Term Rentals.

We’re very grateful to Steve Yarwood and Let Go Short Term Rentals for stepping up and taking on a Shared Gold Sponsorship of our State Grade Ladies team.

This is an exciting new chapter for the club, and we’re looking forward to a very special season for the girls.

We’re continuing to work in the background on securing our second Gold Sponsor and hopefully we can announce that in the coming weeks.

Grass “Season Opening” - Saturday 3rd October.

The grass courts are coming along beautifully and, all going well, we're looking forward to officially opening the new season on Saturday 3rd October.

The plan is tennis as usual from 1pm, followed by our official Season Opening Ceremony at 4.15pm, with some tasty snacks and the bar open so we can all come together, celebrate the new season and enjoy what promises to be a very exciting year for Scarborough Tennis Club.

Social Tennis 1pm–4pm
Official Opening Ceremony 4.15pm

This is a big club day, with special guests including the Mayor Mark Irwin and other City of Stirling representatives joining us.

So, if possible, wear your club colours and come along.

It’s our first big day of the new season and I’d love to see plenty of members there

Hard court resurfacing - from 5th October.

Our hard courts are getting a major makeover.

We’ve chosen a two-tone colour scheme with a rich Forest Green surround and Arctic Blue playing areas, finished with white lines and double-thickness baselines.

We’ve also chosen a CoolTop surface system, designed to reduce surface heat and improve player comfort during those hot Perth days.

The construction will be completed in three stages:

Courts 4, 5 & 6
From 5th October - approximately 10 days

Court 1 underground remedial works
From 5th October - approximately 4 weeks

Courts 1, 2 & 3 resurfacing
Expected sometime in November, once the Court 1 remedial works are completed - approximately 10 days.

This will obviously create some disruption, particularly for the Coaching Academy and our Juniors, who will need to make use of the grass courts and other available facilities while the hard courts are unavailable.

It’s a significant project, but the end result will be a fantastic improvement to the club and something our players will enjoy for many years to come.

Lots happening at Scarborough. Lots to look forward to.

International Rules Tournament - 17th October.

One of our favourite club traditions is back - it's Internationals vs Australians! 🌏🇦🇺

We’ll divide our players into two teams based on where they were born, then let the tennis do the talking.

It’s a doubles tournament, with divisions and pairings assigned by the Captains’ teams. Expect plenty of friendly rivalry, bragging rights and, of course, a few laughs along the way.

Members only
$5 entry - includes BBQ
Check-in: 12pm
Tennis starts: 12.30pm

More details on the format and teams will be coming soon.

Save the date, dress up, pick your side and get ready for battle! 🌏🇦🇺🎾

Summer Pennants commences - 24th October.

The summer Pennants season is almost here, with Saturday 24 October marking the start of another big season of competitive tennis at Scarborough.

Leading the charge is our State Grade Ladies team, with Meg and Ali Connell and their teammates taking on some of the strongest competition in WA on our grass show courts.

Their home matches will be a great opportunity to watch some seriously good tennis right here at the club. Come down, grab a drink from the bar, settle in on the grass and get behind the ladies.

And there’s plenty more Scarborough tennis to support.

We’ll have our Division 5 Ladies team, along with four men’s teams competing in the Saturday Open competition:

Division 3 · Division 5 · Division 7 · Division 12

Our Division 2 Over 45s Men will also be in action on Sunday afternoons.

So there’ll be plenty of Scarborough teams taking to the court throughout the summer.

Come and support your club. Cheer loudly. Enjoy the tennis. 🎾

Restring Special.

Get your racquet summer-ready. 🎾

If your strings are looking a little worse for wear, now is the perfect time to give your racquet some love before the Summer Pennants season gets underway.

For every restring completed during September, you’ll receive a free can of tennis balls. Offer not available when supplying your own string.
